Animation is Hard!

Some people are often shocked when they hear that a one or two minute animated video can cost thousands of dollars.

Perhaps its because animations like ours seem so effortless (because they are so entertaining and well-done of course!)  Or perhaps its because many of us have lived through those (mostly bad) PowerPoint presentations that have built-in ‘animated’ features like flying bullet points and magical fade-outs that can be created at the click of a button.

Whatever it is, unique and original animations are hard to do!  Its a process that we love nonetheless, but one shouldn’t be fooled into thinking that they are created magically or at a click of a button.

Take a look at at the video below as we scrub through a whopping one second from one visual asset of our own demo video.  In it, we make the word ANIMATE come alive with arms and legs (best seen at full screen size):

On the top ‘timeline’ area, each tiny dot represents a key frame: an area where animated action either starts or stops.  As you can see there are a lot of them, and they were all added individually by hand! It’s worth noting that several more key frames (for things like the individual legs and arms) are ‘hidden’ inside further layers on the timeline!

While time consuming, creating animations by hand is a what we at Topic Simple do best. Interested in getting your own?
